A New Kind of Civil War
Bridging the Divide
At the Constitutional Convention of 1789, there were three major issues to overcome in founding our nation. The first was getting each of the 13 colonies to give up some of their sovereignty and be part of the new nation. The second was resolving the issue of slavery. Two states, South Carolina and Georgia, wouldn’t agree to a constitution that abolished slavery. Without their agreement, there would be no United States. Consequently, the second issue, abolishing slavery, would have to wait. It would be settled 60 years later with the American Civil War.
Balance of Power
The third issue was the balance of power between the federal government and the states. There were two competing ideas. The Federalists, led by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, wanted a strong, centralized federal government with broad powers. The Anti-Federalists, led by Thomas Jefferson, wanted a limited federal government and states with strong powers.
The Anti-federalists argued that too much power in a federal government would eventually lead to tyranny. To allay these concerns, a Bill of Rights (the first ten amendments to the Constitution), was added. The Bill of Rights clearly defined citizens’ rights and limited the federal government’s powers. Preeminent among these were the right of freedom of speech, right to bear arms, and right to due process of law. The Bill of Rights brought balance to the two sides, and the U. S. Constitution was ratified! The result was a Constitutional Republic.
A New Kind of Division
Today, our Republic is facing a new challenge that is extremely dangerous to the continued existence of our Constitutional Republic. It is a new kind of “civil war.” It isn’t fought with guns, swords and cannons.
This is a battle of ideas. It pits the concepts and philosophies of socialism and communism against the founding principles of our Constitutional Republic. This affront is led by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a far-left element of the Democrat Party. They openly hate the U. S. Constitution and want to destroy and replace it.

The Democratic Socialists of America
What the DSA proposes is clear:
- Opening our borders to unrestricted and unvetted immigration
- Defunding the police, the military, and ICE
- Abolishing prisons
- Abolishing the Senate, the Presidency, and the Electoral College as they exist today.
- Expanding the Supreme Court
- Allowing the House of Representative to elect the President and the Supreme Court Justices who would be subordinate to them.
- Government ownership of large companies, which are the means of production and a
- One political party government, and much more.

The Threat of Socialism and Communism
Socialism and communism are “top down” philosophies. Unlike capitalism’s “bottom up” free market, grass root origin, socialism and communism are founded in the writings of Karl Marx and socialist philosophers. There is nothing “grass roots” about them. They are creations conceived by elitists in universities and imposed on the people.
Today, socialist and communist philosophies are promoted in college faculty lounges and taught in the classrooms of state and public and universities. During the past 40 years they have also been taught to our children and grandchildren in secondary public schools. With this type of brainwashing, it’s not surprising that the movement is gaining momentum.
Seriously – Abolish the U.S. Constitution?
In the DSA’s proposed government, the U. S. Constitution and Bill of Rights will be abolished. Citizens will become subjects of the State. Government will grant (or take away) all individual rights and privileges. The idea that we are endowed “with certain unalienable rights” will be abolished. The First and Second Amendments, which guarantee our rights to free exercise of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to bear arms will be gone.
What the DSA proposes is not pruning the branches on the Tree of Liberty but pulling it up by its roots.
The DSA calls themselves socialist, but many people say they’re communists. Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, commented on X, after reading the DSA platform, “This is no longer common sense versus crazy, it’s common sense versus COMMUNISM!”
“This is no longer common sense versus crazy, it’s common sense versus COMMUNISM!” Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House
Regardless of whether they are socialists or communists, the DSA is clear in their hatred of the U. S. Constitution and their desire to destroy and replace it.
A Call to Action!
This brazen assault on the U.S. Constitution is alarming! It is a “call to action” that must be answered. Otherwise, it will be the end of our nation as we know it. It begs the question, “What can I do?” Here are some suggestions:
- Don’t be intimidated. Be aware, face the threat, learn the issues, develop your responses, and talk with family, friends, and neighbors about the seriousness of the threat
- Get involved by working for candidates, consider running for office or school board, be a poll worker, and vote,
- Monitor what your schools are teaching in social studies, and the books and resources available to them in school libraries.
- Submit a Parental Rights Opt-Out Form to your public school,
- Lobby your school district to teach and support civics in public schools, especially during Constitution Week.
- Monitor your children’s social media and consider Radiant Mobile as your phone provider because of its network-level hard stop on certain content.[1]
- Consider homeschooling your children or setting up a Learning Pod with a small group of like-minded parents,[2)
- Rethink higher education and the type of university you want your children to attend,
- Write to your local politicians and call their offices – often,
- Follow state legislation that is being considered and call your representatives to voice your concerns or support for particular bills.
- Don’t be complacent, and
- Pray for our country.
Holding onto the Gift
Our founding fathers left us the precious gift of a Constitutional Republic. They gave us the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights to govern ourselves.
We have limited government and the underlying principles of unalienable rights and freedoms. They also implemented a system of checks and balances within the three branches of our federal government and between the federal government and the states. Our U.S. Constitution allows for changes as needed in the form of amendments.
Today, we have 27 amendments. If more amendments are needed, they can be passed using our current system, which has worked for over 250 years and ushered in more freedom, more property, and more rights for men and women than virtually any other nation. Yet, today our system is being challenged by a philosophy with a history that is littered with failure, mass murder, civil rights abuses, and systemic corruption.
At the end of the Constitutional Convention, it is reported that Benjamin Franklin was asked, “Mr Franklin have you given us a republic or a monarchy?” He replied, “A republic, if you can keep it?” Having been entrusted with the precious gift of a constitutional republic, will we stand by and allow it to be defeated by a failed philosophy, or will we stand up and fight?
